Configuration

VSCode will complain on startup if it has to register too many files for watching. Add new patterns (e.g. **/.venv/**) to Settings->Text Editor->Files-> Watcher Exclude.

Python Extension

On Ubuntu 18.04, you’ll need to install python3.8 and configure the extension to use that, otherwise you’ll get module not found errors for dataclasses.
